Club Meeting on 10/4: ARES/RACES with K3ITH

Join us for the PAARC monthly club meeting on Friday, October 4th at 7:00 pm. Our presentation will be on ARES/RACES. Come and learn about the important reporting changes for ARES. The presenter will be Richard “Dick” Stewart, K3ITH, the District 1  Emergency Coordinator.  You may remember him from the outstanding train car presentation he did last year. All are welcome to join us at St. James Lutheran Church, Kugler Rd. and Swamp Pike, Limerick, PA.  Refreshments served.

There will be a Amateur Radio license exam session prior to the meeting at 5:00 pm. Visit this page for details on how to sign up and what to bring.

K3ITH Private Rail Charters

At the 1/5/18 meeting we had a delightful presentation by Richard “Dick” Stewart/K3ITH on his private railroad car and some of his charters. Many hams know Dick as a fellow Rooster, and for his work with PARA (Phila. Area Repeater Assoc.).  Given that many hams are train buffs we had a strong turnout of members despite the freezing weather.  Dick bought the Francis L. Sutter Pennsylvania RR car two years ago and he and his XYL Cathy have been their own custom touches. This Amtrak certified 1914 Pullman heavyweight business car includes a lounge with originally installed working wood burning fire place, bedrooms, dining room, and full kitchen. It may be connected to almost any Amtrak passenger train and travel up to 110 MPH in the U.S. and Canada. Dick  and his family have enjoyed trips all over the country. He also offers charter trips! Spring 2023 SET / Red Cross Winlink Exercise

On April 1 the EPA and WPA participated in statewide Winlink exercise in cooperation with the American Red Cross. The drill, coordinated by Red Cross DCS Jay King, W2AFE and his team, was a resounding success with more than 112 operators sending 350 messages to various Red Cross chapters in Pennsylvania. The exercise was conducted exclusively via digital protocols using Winlink.

Of the 112 participants, 96 were ARES members, 28 were Red Cross members, 36 used emergency power, 17 operated mobile and 94 were able to deploy with a VHF station. Winlink messages were sent using a variety of digital protocols including VARA FM, VARA HF, PACKET, ARDOP, PACTOR and TELNET.

The exercise was designed to test the response and deployment availability of ARES units and members in a widespread emergency in which the American Red Cross needed to send a variety of formatted messages throughout the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
